Urana – NSW

We are spending a quiet day or two at Urana Caravan Park and Aquatic Centre. Yep another little gem that we found through WikiCamps.

This small town meets the needs for people living in the Riverina area and is again one of those wide street towns. Just beautiful. It hosts some real treasures like the huge Urana Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, known to be the largest in Australia, built in 1923 to commemorate soldiers who fought and died in the wars.

In 1866 this small town had two Hotels. The Royal George and the Urana Hotel. Today only the Urana Hotel is in operation. The Post Office was first opened in 1861 and the town itself was gazetted in 1859. The main street was probably quite busy in its day. Now there are quite a few empty buildings. One of which was a ‘Barber and Billiard Rooms’ and is now for sale for $30,000. Yep that’s what the sign says.

Make sure you also check out the eccentric sculptures around the town. One just near the caravan park is “The Big Spider”. Does that mean there are big spiders here?? As you drive from town to the caravan park there is a corner which has a sculpture of a horse drinking at a trough with a corrugated drover and sheep.

The streets are lined with beautiful purple leaf plum trees and you will also see some fabulous roses on some of the corners and in the gardens . While we were walking in town a friendly local from nearby Oaklands asked how we were and we chatted for a while. She then asked if we knew there is a great caravan park down the end of that road, pointing in the direction we were about to head off to. We smiled and said a big thank you as that it was exactly where we were heading. We felt the meeting had given us a really nice unofficial welcome to this wonderful little town.

Upon arrival at the caravan park we were greeted by a very bubbly young lady and found out that she and her husband had only recently taken on the responsibilities of Park Managers. If first impressions are anything to go by, this caravan park will continue to grow in popularity with many travellers. Just after we had finished setting up there was a knock on the door and we were greeted with a plate of hot scones with jam and cream What a nice surprise and so yummy. Thanks Maddie.

The park overlooks Lake Urana and the sites are grassy and large. The amenities are basic and large and clean. NOTE TO SELF……READ THE SIGNS…… in regards to hot water showers. There is also a laundry and outside camp kitchen and Dump Point. TV reception didn’t happen for us and there is no park Wi-Fi but our Telstra modem worked a treat.

The park is situated on the edge of town and it’s an easy flat walk into town along the Lake. The Aquatic Centre is a very popular place in the late afternoon with the boating and fishing fraternity and also great for Stand up Paddle boarding. Not to mention some spectacular sunsets.

Lovely quiet place at the moment, but I am sure come. Christmas, which is not too far away, and with the weather warming up it will be quite popular. Right now we paid $25 for a powered grassy site.

Thanks Maddie and Justin

Well that’s enough for now.
