Our Rig

Lately we have been receiving many messages enquiring about the rig we travel with. So, we have decided to put a few words together about our setup.

Our tow vehicle (tug) is a Jeep (2016) Grand Cherokee, 3Ltr diesel, with an 8-speed auto transmission. Now I can hear the sniggers already  ‘What you bought a Jeep?’… yep we sure did and it tows our very comfortable and modern home on wheels. A 21.65-3 Jayco Silverline Outback (2016). The Jeep came from the car yard as an ex demo unit and apart from a few minor tweaks everything is stock standard. Jayco came to us directly from the factory as we ordered it from the dealer.

Since we started our adventures early in 2017, we have rolled around our beautiful country just a little short of 3 laps. Jeep has clocked up just on 70K kilometres and the Jayco has been hooked on for more than 50K of that travel. In all that time Jeep has been a very comfortable ride. There hasn’t been a day when we have hopped out of the Jeep feeling stiff or sore, thanks Jeep.

The only changes we made with the Jeep was to replace the original exterior rear-view mirrors with a set of Clearview towing mirrors and ditched the cheap original factory fitted tyres at 18K for some good rubber that is designed to keep us safe. We fitted a full set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tyres and we are happy we did. The Nitto tyres have saved us a couple of times and helped to keep us safe through a lot of different terrains. The only modification (as such) that Jeep has seen is an I-tune throttle gizmo that gets rid of the throttle lag that happens when you attempt to accelerate. Oh yes and Graeme also fitted a full length, flat roof rack made by Uneek so he could throw something up there if he needed to do so. Mmmm still haven’t found that item to throw up on the roof rack so It has never been used.

During our Australian adventures we have stayed in many towns, met some incredible characters and have enjoyed travelling the different roads. Some roads are way better than others. Sometimes we look at each other asking  “how did we get to be on this road?” Then Siri (navigation system) pipes up saying, “make a U-turn NOW” or maybe “route re-calculation”. Who else has words with Siri? She wouldn’t like to hear what we say sometimes and we are waiting for her to one day yell at us for not doing what she says.

Our Jayco Silverline Outback is our one-bedroom modern apartment on wheels and is our home away from home. We love it. People ask us if we would change the way our Jayco has been set up. We respond with a smile and a little nod but in reality, it is only a little nod.

At the time of purchase the Jayco sales person recommended a couple of optional things for our original fit out. Unfortunately, we have found them to be totally useless. One is a privacy curtain fitted between the kitchen area and the bedroom. At the time we thought ‘yep’ good idea. It’s never been used and as Graeme says it’s just a dust collector. The other item is the outside (slide out) BBQ. It struggles to cook when the wind blows and after using it for the first six weeks of our travels, we bit the bullet and bought a Weber Baby Q. Much better indeed and the BBQ stays hidden out of sight.

If we knew what we know now we would certainly not have some of the inclusions. For instance, our Jayco model has a cupboard above the TV beside the entry door. The cupboard has two plastic shelves and a Perspex door. It is designed for stemmed glasses and 4 bottles of wine. The latter we don’t do as they tend to fall over. We feel this whole item is a waste of space. We would also get rid of the slide out BBQ and the inside oven. It would reduce the weight of the van a tad and maybe room for more usable items.
