Our Australian Road Trip So Far

We have completed what many people call ‘The Big Lap’. An understatement as far as we are concerned because our adventures have only just started. We have not travelled to Tasmania yet or many other places. Really we have only just scratched the surface, so to speak. So this trip/lap we travelled for 277 days and covered well over 22,000 kms. Previously we did a tour of of the NSW high country and far North Queensland.

We are currently spending a few weeks exploring our home town’s back yard and surrounding areas while our next trip is constantly building within our thoughts. We will be visiting some of the many places and towns that we missed during our previous trips.

During our time away 9+ months we met some of the most wonderful people. From young to old and from every state in Australia and around the world. We enjoyed many a camp fire and ‘happy hour’ where we talked and sometimes laughed till we cried. Saw sunrises and sunsets and did our fair share of the ‘great Aussie wave’.

The most common question we get asked is what our favourite place was? Quite honestly I don’t think we have one favourite place and there are just too many to list. We always look forward to the next town or overnight stay. Several of our overnight stops became extended stays because there was so much to see and enjoy.

Most of our accommodation was spent in caravan parks. Although we did enjoy our 30 nights of ‘free camping’. The lowest price we paid was $15 in Pussy Cat Flats, NT to the highest being $50 at Coral Bay, WA. These were sites that provided power and water. Diesel prices were quite extraordinary across the board with the highest price being $1.899 at Barkly Station in the NT.👀

If you follow our posts you will know how much we love buying local produce, especially from the local butchers and fish from Co-ops or seafood outlets. We get very excited when we spot a road side fruit and vegie stall and always stop and buy something. Yum…

One of our favourite Butchers was at the time in Coffin Bay – Rawmeat Store. We loved the flat packed Chicken and our Christmas ham. But on top of that they also sold the most mouthwatering finger licking chocolate custard slice. Yep all this and more. They are no longer in Coffin Bay and you will need to drop in at their new location in Port Lincoln, SA. Check out their Facebook page – Raw meatstore.

Our favourite local pie shop was Julia’s Kitchen in Wirrabara, SA and our favourite fish and chips were bought at the Shark Bay Hotel in Denham,WA. We also had the most enjoyable two course bush dinner prepared by the Julia Creek Lions Club at Julia Creek Caravan Park, QLD. Boston Brewery in Denmark, WA was where we enjoyed sampling a paddle of very unique ales.

Hopefully our next trip will see us travelling through regions when the local veggies are more in season and the fish biting.

Other favourite things were doing the Silo Art Trail, Katherine Outback Experience, Lake Argyle Cruise and the Bungle Bungle helicopter flight, Lucky Bay, Esperance, Station stays, catching squid and whiting in SA, Redclaw (yabbies) in Emerald (central West Queensland), Threadfin salmon at 80 mile beach (WA)…

Eight Mile Beach WA

But besides all of the above we loved the times we were spotting crocs, walking with snakes, dodging kangaroos, cattle, camels and emus. Also enjoying the ever changing panoramic landscapes and the bluest oceans and the whitest beaches and not to mention the ever stimulating sunrises and relaxing sunsets.

And the list goes on and on and on…..

We can’t wait to hit the road again and are already champing at the bit to get going. Our “Aussie Caravanning Lifestyle” continues…………..

Well that’s enough for now.
