Denmark

We are currently based in The Great Southern region of Western Australia and free camping on a family’s property between Albany and Denmark. How lucky are we? Thank you family 😊.

So besides being able to chill out we are taking our time to do some wonderful day trips around this special region.

During one of our day trip loops we headed into the charming country town of Denmark which is located a little west from Albany and approximately 420 kilometers from Perth. The Visitor’s Information Centre offers travellers the chance to unhook and drive some of the ‘not caravan friendly’ roads (space permitting of course) to experience the beauty of the area.

The town is a great stop for a coffee or maybe some fresh bread or a pie from the award winning bakery and a chance to browse through the several ‘harmony’ specialty retail stores. Unfortunately as much as we would have liked to show photos of the Bakery the store has a sign inside their shop saying ‘NO Photos or Videos allowed’. Great bread though👌.

The town has a Super IGA, pharmacy, newsagent and of course our favourite, a Butcher. The day of our first visit to Denmark was Australia Day and naturally the Butcher was closed, but that’s OK we will be back in town soon. While in town do yourself a favour and enjoy strolling around the town’s historic buildings, cool cafes or take in some of the galleries.

Denmark has an absolutely stunning coastal scene and during our visit we took a couple of the recommended drives including Wilson Head, Ocean Beach, Lights Beach and William Bay Road to the Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks. The latter being one of our favourite stops. Being Australia Day and reasonably hot it was quite busy and everyone seemed to want to enjoy a day at the beach. The water here is also a clear turquoise and the Greens Pool beach area had so many delightful protected ocean pools to swim in. It’s no wonder everyone wanted to be here.

The Mount Shadforth scenic loop drive from Denmark is certainly not suitable for caravans as most of the roads are gravel and corrugated and a little narrow in spots. This drive is quite stunning as you meander through farmlands and vineyards. Denmark is a major wine producing area and there are many cellars open for tastings and some include a café, restaurant or gallery.

While travelling we love finding roadside fresh fruit and vegie stalls, however during many parts of our adventures they have been few and far between. But here in the South West of WA we have been in luck and found three farm fresh produce stalls which enticed us to fill our larder.

One community stall in particular “The Good Food Shed” located in the Bornholm Siding Shed, at the corner of Lower Denmark Road and Shepherds Lagoon Road, has some wonderful local fresh produce. When we visited we could buy tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, onions, garlic, beetroot and so much more. Besides fruit and vegies there’s also local honey and the most delicious fresh feta cheese, both of which you can try before you buy. Yum.

If you are looking for some fresh Marron then this may be the spot for you. Great Southern Marron have samples of their live two and three year old Marron for you to buy direct from their local aquaculture farm.

Denmark and the surrounding area has so much to offer and we are sure we will be posting more in the next few days. For those of you visiting with a Caravan we did spot a Big4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park which looked awesome.
