Western Australia Road Trip 2018

Western Australia is a place you can literally spend months exploring. This page is about our first trip in 2018 when we spent four months enjoying what WA has to offer. Don’t forget to also check out our WA’s Got the Lot 2019 trip where instead of sticking to the coast we meandered inland. Such great memories and so much fun.

Once we crossed the border from South Australia our first stop was in Eucla.

Eucla – Once across we decided to make our way to Eucla and spend the night at the Eucla Caravan Park which is a member of the Family Parks group. With our membership the site cost for the night with power (no water) was $22.50.

Fraser Range Station – What can we say but WOW another great overnight stop was had at Fraser Range Station. We left Eucla at 5.30 am and already the temperature was around 29C. The weather forecast suggested the temperature would be up to 45C so we were glad to get on the road early, as were many of the other travellers.

EsperanceWe live in an exceptionally beautiful country and the beaches and rugged coastline of Esperance WA are a sensational example. The water is a crystal clear and the beaches are snow white.

Jerramungup – Between Esperance and Albany is a small town by the name of Jerramungup. We stopped in overnight at the Jerramungup Caravan Park. Great large drive through sites for $30 per night for 2 adults with power and water.

Denmark – We were very fortunate to be able to park on a family property and so spent a few weeks exploring this fabulous area.

Manjimup  – I grew up in Western Australia around the Perth region and many times I heard about people having summer holidays in Manjimup and to be more specific Fonty’s Pool. So it was with great delight when I saw an opportunity to stop at the Fonty’s Pool Caravan Park and Chalets with Graeme.

Karrinyup Waters Resort – After we left Manjimup, Western Australia we headed into Perth my home town to spend some quality time with my family. Even though we are not use to traffic congestion, we managed to negotiate our way through four lanes of peak hour freeway mayhem to our destination at Karrinyup Waters Resort.

Ledge PointJust 105km north of Perth is the small coastal town of Ledge Point. This town was gazetted in 1955 to service the growing local fishing and crayfish industries. Originally there were three squatters’ shacks before a road was put in to allow easier access.

Port Dennison – Situated around 360 kms north of Perth and south of the Geraldton region, is the beautiful coastal twin town of Dongara – Port Denison, separated by the Irwin River.

Horrocks – Horrocks, Western Australia is a well-hidden coastal hamlet between Geraldton and Kalbarri. The moment you make the descent to Horrocks you will notice the glorious ocean views which instantly make you feel like you’re on holidays.

KalbarriAbout midway along the WA Coral Coast is one of those beautiful places. There is so much to see and do within the region and we really wanted to take our time enjoying everything Kalbarri has to offer. Besides that the days were extremely hot and averaged between 36 and just over 40 deg C and the flies were incredibly annoying.

Denham – Denham is the gateway for exploring the  Shark Bay World Heritage Area. Situated appoximately 9 hours North of Perth. From here you can venture into special areas including Dirk Hartog Island, Steep Point, Eagle Bluff, Shell Beach, Francois Peron National Park and don’t forget Monkey Mia.

Carnarvon – We loved Carnarvon but were a little disappointed as we were a little head of time to enjoy this wonderful region of the ‘Fruit Bowl’.

Coral Bay – Our drive from Carnarvon to Coral Bay found us stopping at a couple of very interesting places. For instance our crossing into the ‘Tropic of Capricorn’. The day was a hot one at 40 deg while we entered the tropics.

Exmouth – Exmouth is located on the North West Cape of Western Australia and offers easy access to Cape Range National Park at the northern end of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage area. There is so much to see and do in this region.

Bullara Station – Bullara Station is located between Coral Bay and Exmouth and gives you a true feeling of what it’s like to be on a working cattle station in the North West of Western Australia.

Point Samson – So off we headed to Point Samson, by-passing Karratha, for the time being. We stayed at The Cove Holiday Village in Point Samson which is right on the beach. From the park there is an easy walking path which takes you to the beautiful Honeymoon Cove.

Eighty Mile Beach – Approximately half way between Port Hedland and Broome is Eighty Mile Beach. We decided to stay here for a few nights to break the long trip to Broome from Point Samson.

Broome – Travelling from Eighty Mile Beach we headed towards Broome which is situated at the southwestern corner of the Kimberley Region. Only a couple of months earlier the roads we were now travelling had been covered by flood waters from record breaking rains.

Derby – We stopped in Derby a town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia at the Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park which is situated in the centre of town. It’s a beautiful and spacious caravan park and offers a huge selection of spacious and shady powered and unpowered sites to suit everyone on a Kimberley camping trip.

Mary Pool – WA you have done it again. We found a great overnight stop at Mary Pool along the Savannah Way (Great Northern Highway) in the Kimberley region as we head towards Kununurra.

Kununurra – And the best for last. It was a long drive from our overnight stop at Mary Pool, beside the Mary River, because along the way we stopped in to look at a couple of the free camps so we can share what they are like with you and other travellers.
