Eucla – Western Australia

Woohoo we have crossed from South Australia into Western Australia. The weather was extremely hot and very windy and we crossed the border at 39C. Going through Quarantine was a breeze and did not take long at all. We ticked all the boxes and the lady who checked our car and van was very pleasant, even though it was a little busy and as mentioned above soooo hot.

Once across we decided to make our way to Eucla and spend the night at the Eucla Caravan Park which is a member of the Family Parks group. With our membership the site cost for the night with power (no water) was $22.50. We love it when a park says you can pick your own site. However, the layout at Eucla CP had us and other caravanners somewhat confused. The sites are all quite level and laid out on white gravel and situated on top of a ridge with views to the South. Our site had some great ocean views. The amenities are old and very average but clean. If you don’t feel like cooking then the roadhouse serves some top meals.

Eucla – WA Crossing the Nullarbor

Did you know that Eucla has a different time zone from Adelaide and Perth? We didn’t and were enlightened of this time difference by the receptionist. It’s 45 minutes ahead of Perth and apparently the time difference takes in a particular region of WA. According to Wikipedia “Eucla and the surrounding area, notably Mundrabilla and Madura, use the Central Western Time Zone of UTC+8:45. Although it has no official sanction, it is universally observed in this area, stopping just to the east of Caiguna”.

The drive from Penong to Eucla saw us stopping in several places to check out the scenic views of the Great Australian Bight. They were breath taking to say the least.

We also stopped at the Nullarbor Roadhouse to fuel up with diesel ($1.89 per litre) and food. Lunch was a couple of freshly made wraps and coffee and as much as I usually don’t like to buy roadhouse food, this was really delicious.

Of course we did take the obligatory sign post pics as well. So far it has been a great crossing.
