Blowering Dam – NSW

What an absolute awesome place to free camp. Just off the Snowy Mountains Highway, about 21km south of Tumut on the way to Talbingo is a free campground called The Pines (Blowering Dam) situated in the northern precinct of Kosciuszko National Park. This place is famous for the world water speed record Ken Warby achieved on 8 October 1978 in his boat the Spirit of Australia travelling at 511.1 kilometres per hour. Today it has still not be beaten.

The campground is on the banks of the Blowering Reservoir.

It’s a beautiful area with a ‘first in – first served’ arrangement.  There are no facilities to pre-book a preferred site. You  are free to find your own suitable site which can be right beside the waters edge or further back under the shade of the trees. There are plenty of areas to choose from, but it may be a little different during peak holiday times. The toilets are situated well back from the waters edge in the area where the trees are.

The reservoir is a popular place for all sorts of water sport. Sailing, waterskiing, jet skis, canoeing and swimming are very popular during the warmer months. If you have a boat there are several boat ramps around the waters edge. Want to try a spot of fishing? Well the dam is stocked with Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch, trout and other fish species. However, for fishing rules and regulations contact DPI NSW.
