Childers – QLD

This beautiful town with its main street lined with colonial buildings is located approximately 54km south of Bundaberg. We drove through the town back in 2017 on our way to Calliope. Even then I thought it looked lovely with its many historical buildings and large trees, which I have since found out are Brazilian Leopard Trees. We decided to take a drive from Burnett Heads to check out the town and well let’s say I was certainly not disappointed👍.

The town originally came into existence as a service town for the surrounding sugar cane fields. Today it is a very popular stopping point for the travelling public. Tourists are well catered for along with the sugar industry plus the growing number of macadamia and avocado farms in the surrounding countryside.

What an awesome town. The main street is a hive of activity with its many funky cafes☕️, restaurants, pubs🍻, old butcher stores🥩 and I counted 3 bakeries🥖🥧.

The Palace Building houses the Visitors Information Centre but back in 2000 it was a backpacker’s hostel. Infamously it was deliberately burnt down and sadly 15 lives were lost. It has since been restored in honour of those who lost their lives😔.

Despite such a tragic happening the town does have a lovely vibe and is well worth a stopover to enjoy a break and stretch your legs. There is a great 20 hr parking facility for caravans and motor homes one street back from the Bruce Highway in Crescent Street which is in the heart of Childers👍. It’s in close proximity to public toilets and BBQ’s plus it also has a dump point.

The day we were in town it seemed to be very popular and there were several rigs of various sizes parked in the marked bays. I wish more councils would have these great stops for travellers. Anyway you will also find it on WikiCamps.
