We left Jabiru in the NT’s Kakadu National Park and spent the day exploring several areas along the way to Pine Creek including the Yellow Waters area, Cooinda, and Gungural Campground which you can read about on our previous posts.
We really wanted to venture into many special areas that we had read about that have waterfalls and canyons and cultural history. Unfortunately access was closed to some of these areas for various reasons. One sign said that the closures were due to feral animal culling (shooting), others were closed because the roads were still unpassable and other special locations still had salt water crocodiles close to where people go to.
So we decided to head onto a place we had seen on Wikicamps known as Pussy Cat Flats adjacent to Pine Creek north of Katherine.
We are so glad we decided to pull up here for the night. The camp area is on the side of an old racecourse that also had a 9 hole golf course and a fully licensed bar. Unfortunately all the previous facilities are now closed. Graham the park host greets you as you drive in and after a very friendly welcome and rundown on the basics of the camp area you have the pick of powered or unpowered sites.
The amenities were so clean and the showers hot. On top of it all we could watch the ABC with great TV reception. We don’t travel with a satellite dish so when we get TV reception in the outback it’s a bonus for us.

We loved our stay here and would recommend if you are looking for an overnight stop before or after entering Kakadu National Park.
