Capella – QLD

From Charters Towers we headed towards Capella a small town in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland and approximately 50 km from Emerald. It’s only a small town with the main street being the Gregory Highway. The history of town dates back to the mid 1800’s and exists because of a mixture of coal mining and agriculture in the district.

We spent a couple of nights at Capella Van Park which was delightful. Jody the owner makes sure that everyone is happy and gives you that old fashioned service of actually directing you into your site. Most of the sites are drive-thru and you can either choose grass or slabs.

The park also has:

• Modern clean amenities
• Laundry
• Dump point
• Great information room
• Swimming pool
• BBQ’s
• Camp kitchen
• Happy hour around the fire pit
• Pet friendly
• TV and Telstra reception

Not far from the park is a concrete pathway which runs along the Gregory Highway and takes you into town which is only a few hundred metres away. Along the way you can enjoy the impressive Australian Light Horse sculptural monuments which are a series of two steel silhouettes of horsemen and one of a Light Horsemen with an emu plume. The path winds past some small boab trees and finishes at the town’s historic railway station and very memorable “The Dunny” mural.

Unfortunately due to the changing regional economy some of the town’s businesses have closed down such as the supermarket and hairdresser. Still operating are a pharmacy, post office, café/takeaway food store, pub and a newsagent with a shared hardware store.

Also in town is a cinema which shows movies on a regular basis but make sure you check the notice board in front of the newsagent for viewing times. It also has a public swimming pool and a very large cultural centre and a golf and bowling club.

A site with power and water at the caravan park at the time of our visit was $30 per night.
