PORT AUGUSTA – SA

Our drive from Coober Pedy to Port Augusta seemed to take forever with nothing much to see along the way🙄. Thank goodness for podcasts🎼.

We did stop for lunch at Glendambo and had a look around. We initially thought of staying there for the night, but sorry ‘Glendambo’ we were an hour or so ahead of where we originally thought we may have been but you were kicking up a huge local dust storm 🌬, so we looked at the alternatives and moved on.

During our previous adventures through this beautiful part of SA we have passed straight through Port Augusta and enjoyed our stays in alternative nearby localities.

This time we felt it was time to stop at Port Augusta and experience what the town has to offer fellow travelers.

After checking into our Caravan Park we ventured out the next day to enjoy Port Augusta. I don’t think we could have picked a worse day….but we are not in charge of the weather. The moment you stepped out of the van we were hit by dry hot dusty northerly winds straight out of the inland, you know the type that gets grit in your eyes😳. But we did it and stepped out to check as much as we could in town plus some shopping (as we do) at some of the local shops.

The Waldata Outback Centre or Visitor Information Centre was our first port of call. This place looks great and offers a ‘Tunnel of Time’ through the mouth of Max a prehistoric giant ‘Ripper Lizard’🦖, awesome. Entry is by a fee and for us it would have been $40, and that’s senior rates.

Before you hit your keyboard and say we missed the best ever tour…….wait!! I have to be honest if we took every tour that excited us we would not be travelling because our resources would dry up very quickly💸. Instead we pick and choose the ones that excite us👌. Who knows next time through we may just put this tour on the list.

We also visited the Wharflands Esplanade and I am sure it is lovely on a clear day. As we always do we drove around the town and back areas to get a feel of the area. Then it was off to Woollies for some much needed groceries…….yay. It excites us to be able to get some reasonably fresh produce.

We stayed at the Discovery Parks as it had great recommendations on Wiki Camps.
