Tenterfield – NSW

We left Spring Creek and headed to the small rural town of Allora. I had read that P.L. Travers the author of 🌂Mary Poppins🌂 had lived here as a child. I was intrigued to see her house.

Also, we had been told not to miss out on buying some meat from the Allora Butcher. We bought a massive T-bone steak 🥩 to share, and the most delicious oyster blade steak we have had for a very long time. Yes, the later we have already consumed. Two thumbs up to the butchery 👍👍 and the truly informative service and thank you to everyone who told us to make the stop. Allora also has a great showground if you feel like staying awhile. It is a very quaint town and well worth a stop in. Well for us anyway.

👉Next stop was Warwick. We didn’t really take the time to check out what the town has to offer as we were keen to get to our day’s destination.  From what we saw it probably has a lot more to offer. The steel artwork as you enter the town is quite stunning and depicts many areas of what life in and around the area may be like.

👉Then off we went to our next stop Stanthorpe. Did you know it is said that this is the coldest town in Queensland 🥶. Luckily for us the day had a very comfortable temp when we stopped for lunch right near the Visitor Information Centre where you will also find ‘The Big Thermometer’ in the park. Plus, we took the time to flex the leg muscles with a little walk along Quart Pot Creek that flows through the park lands beside the information centre.  It is really beautiful.

After our lunch stop in Stanthorpe it was time to head to the Qld/NSW border. Woo-hoo another border crossing. 🙌

👉Wallangarra on the Queensland side has a great overnight stop outside of the old railway station including a café which looked inviting. Jennings is on the NSW side and you can also stop overnight at the pub. As the sign says, see the pics, it’s the first pub in NSW…… or as Graeme said, the last Pub as you go north.

👉Finally, we arrived at Tenterfield. Wow I really enjoyed this town. Tenterfield probably became quite famous with the Peter Allen song Tenterfield Saddler about ‘The late George Woolnough’. But did you know that George was Peter’s grandfather. I always thought the song was very moving. The lyrics say the son of George, Dick Woolnough got married and had a war baby…. Peter. Unfortunately, Dick suicided quite young and George (Dick’s dad) could not understand why. The lyrics go on to say ‘The grandson of George (Peter) has been all around the world and lives no special place – Changed his last name’.

We never knew the depth of this story and all I can say is it gives me goosebumps when I put it altogether. If you ever have time read the lyrics it will probably make a lot more sense. It did for us.

Of course, we had to visit the Tenterfield Saddler building and more. Just our luck the Tenterfield Saddler’s shop was closed. But we met Mick who was also checking out the building. He turned around and said ‘I know you two, I know your faces’… it’s quite surreal when people say that and so unexpected. Anyway, we stopped and chatted with this lovely man and later his wife Marg for some time before we headed off on our walking tour of town.

We love walking around these towns as you see and experience so much. I mean we would not have met Mick had we not taken the time to check things out. Oh, and we found another great butcher. We just had to buy some of his award-winning sausages.

Tenterfield Lodge and Caravan Park was where we stayed for a couple of nights. It was meant to be as everything was booked and when I called, something we never used to do, Di said you are in luck as we have one site left.

What a great park. Yep, I know I keep saying that. But it is. Plus, I loved Di and Barry’s enthusiasm for their special place. The lodge itself has so much history and you can see more from our pics. We really loved our stay here and so glad we ventured this way.
